ACR: Proposed Medicare Lung Cancer Screening Coverage a Lifesaver for Seniors

November 2014Medicare’s proposed computed tomography (CT) lung cancer screening coverage would provide high-risk seniors with access to care that can save more lives than any cancer screening test in history.

“CT lung cancer screening is the first and only cost-effective test proven to significantly reduce lung cancer deaths. Medicare coverage provides access to care for seniors and will help physicians save thousands of lives each year from the nation’s leading cancer killer,” said Ella Kazerooni, M.D., FACR, chair of the American College of Radiology Lung Cancer Screening Committee and American College of Radiology Thoracic Imaging Panel.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended (with a Grade of “B”) CT lung cancer screening of adults aged 55-80 who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) narrowed coverage to those ages 55-741 and will require providers to submit clinical and follow-up data to an approved registry. The ACR will apply to be a Medicare recognized registry and will work with stakeholders to submit comments regarding the details of the CMS coverage announcement.

Significant lung cancer screening infrastructure is growing quickly to meet the need for this important public health measure. Medical experts and patient advocates recently outlined infrastructure and quality assurance programs to support screening.

This includes the American College of Radiology (ACR) Lung Cancer Screening Center program, which helps ensure these exams are provided safely and effectively. ACR Lung-RADS standardizes CT lung cancer screening reporting and management, aids lung CT interpretation and supports outcomes monitoring.

“We strongly advise older current and former heavy smokers to speak with their doctors about whether CT lung cancer screening is right for them. If they and their doctor decide that screening is warranted, we encourage patients to seek out an ACR lung cancer screening center,” said Kazerooni.

With the USPSTF recommendation, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires private insurers to cover CT lung cancer screening as an essential health benefit. Today’s decision ensures Medicare beneficiaries have access to these services as well.

“Lung cancer will kill 160,000 Americans this year – more than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. Medicare coverage of these exams helps complete the first major blow against this terrible disease. This is a great day for those at high-risk for lung cancer and their families. We look forward to a future where a lung cancer diagnosis is no longer essentially a death sentence for so many people,” said Kazerooni.

More than 220,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year. Nearly 160,000 people will die from the disease.

Dr. Sepehr Panah provided a greater understanding of how this specialty of medicine can improve health.

Interventional radiology (abbreviated IR or VIR for Vascular and Interventional Radiology, also referred to as Surgical Radiology) is a medical sub-specialty of radiology which utilizes minimally invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. The concept behind interventional radiology is to diagnose and treat patients using the least invasive techniques currently available in order to minimize risk to the patient and improve health outcomes.

National Radiology Technology Week

November 4-10, 2012 – National Radiologic Technology Week is celebrated annually to recognize the vital work of Radiology Technologists (R.T.s) across the nation. The celebration takes place each November to commemorate the anniversary of the X-ray’s discovery by Wilhlem Conrad Roentgen on November 8, 1895.

The weeklong celebration calls attention to the important role medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals play in patient care and health care safety. Quantum Radiology hosted lunch for the radiology staff in appreciation for their efforts in ensuring excellent patient care.

Cobb Heart Walk 2012

October 2012 – Quantum Radiology and supporters raised $2,280 in support of the American Heart Association. The annual Cobb Heart Walk was held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Glover Park in the Marietta Square. Quantum Radiology is an annual participant in the fundraiser.

In the Spirit of Women – Dr. Brant Vincent

October 2012 – Quantum Radiologist Dr. Brant Vincent was the keynote speaker at WellStar’s first Spirit of Women National Signature Event at Town Center Mall in Kennesaw, GA on October 4, 2012. Dr. Brant Vincent sub-specializes in breast imaging and provided an educational discussion about cancer awareness and prevention. Screening mammograms reduce death from breast cancer by at least 30 to 45 percent. Dr. Vincent reiterated the importance of every woman obtaining a mammogram beginning at age 40. Mammograms can be scheduled at multiple locations throughout the WellStar Health system. All mammograms are interpreted by Quantum radiologists that are sub-specialized in breast imaging.

Quantum Introduces Pediatric Imaging

August 2012 – We all know that pediatrics is not adult medicine for small people. Children’s diseases, diagnostic processes, management issues, and treatments are vastly different from those for adults. The same is true for medical imaging. Medical imaging of children is not just adult imaging with small equipment.

Dr. Zahir Momin is the new head of Quantum Radiology’s pediatric imaging program. He recently finished a one-year pediatric radiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Prior to that, he completed a radiology residency and a fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging at Emory. Dr. Momin is currently assisting in the planning of WellStar’s Pediatric Diagnostic Center, which will feature dedicated children’s imaging services in a kid-friendly environment.
